Just days after deadly flash floods tore through Texas’s Hill Country—claiming over 100 lives statewide, including 27 campers and counselors at the iconic Camp Mystic—families are returning their children to summer camp.
In the town of Kerrville, once a focal point for reunification efforts, Trinity Baptist Church resumed its usual role as a summer camp hub. Mothers dropped off their teenagers, even as the parking lot had days earlier been the emotional epicenter of one of the state’s worst natural disasters.
“There’s heartbreak, but there’s tradition. And it runs deep,” said Toni Way, who came with her daughter Brooklyn to drop off a younger sibling.
